4 days in Helsinki
A real plan for a real trip — couple, urban, vegetarian-friendly, July. This is what you get when you order from Sotto.
Arrival + first evening
You land in the afternoon. The plan: get in, drop bags, walk Helsinki's seafront, eat somewhere special.
Land at HEL Airport
Terminal 2. Follow signs to bus stops, Zone C/D side of the building.
Direct from HEL Terminal 2 to Rautatientori (Central Railway Square). ~40 min. Buy ticket in the HSL app before boarding — cash not accepted. Runs every 20 min.
Check in — Scandic Helsinki Hub
Drop bags, freshen up. Central, modern, well-located for everything on this plan. 5 minutes walk from Rautatientori.
Evening walk: seafront Helsinki
Head south to Market Square (Kauppatori) — the beating heart of old Helsinki. Walk the Esplanadi park east, then loop through Katajanokka island to see the cathedral and harbour. 2–3 km, relaxed pace, beautiful in the long July evening light.
Dinner
One Michelin star. Entirely plant-based tasting menu, changing seasonally. One of the most creative kitchens in Helsinki — not just "good for veg", but genuinely world-class. The room is calm and intimate.
Island mornings, Kallio nights
The full Helsinki day. Open-air museum, the best coffee in the city, vinyl hunting in Kallio, and a late night to remember.
Seurasaari Open-Air Museum
Historic Finnish buildings moved from across the country onto a forested island. Wonderfully peaceful in the morning before the day-trippers arrive. Take Tram 4 from the city centre (15 min), then a short walk over the footbridge.
The PM's official summer residence, Kesäranta, is just across the bridge from Seurasaari — you'll walk right past it. Worth noticing.
Coffee
The best coffee in Helsinki. Small roastery, serious about sourcing, unpretentious atmosphere. Their single origins are exceptional. Grab a bag to take home.
Kallio neighbourhood wander
Helsinki's coolest neighbourhood. Walk Helsinginkatu for independent shops and second-hand stores. Climb to Harjutori for a rooftop view over the city. Stop into Levykauppa Äx — Helsinki's best record shop, legendary for crate-digging.
Afternoon coffee break
Two great options: Cafeteria Aalto inside the Aalto University building — iconic interior, calm atmosphere. Or Kulma — popular corner café with Fazer pastries and a great city terrace.
Dinner — pick one
Modern Finnish fine dining with an excellent vegetarian menu. One Michelin star, intimate room, impeccable service. If you want the splurge experience two nights running, this delivers.
Finnish "sapas" — small plates of Nordic seasonal ingredients. Honest, creative, very vegetarian-friendly. A local favourite that doesn't try too hard. This is what we'd pick after already doing Grön the night before.
Kallio nightlife
Here's how the evening builds — work through these in order.
Start here. Cave-like basement bar, Finnish craft beer on tap, no pretension. Classic Helsinki pre-drinks spot. Fills up from 21:00.
More polished, good music, summer terrace. Part of the Kompleksi group which books quality DJs. Good transition into late night.
Legendary Helsinki underground bar. Dark, intimate, starts properly around midnight. Cash preferred at the bar. No dress code, no attitude — just good people and good music.
If you want the full club experience: serious sound system, consistent bookings, starts 1am. Not mandatory — but if you're that way inclined, this is where Helsinki's club scene is at its best.
Sauna morning, slow Sunday
The leisurely day. Löyly for sauna and sea swim, the Design District for browsing, Hakaniemi for the real Helsinki market experience.
Löyly sauna
Architecturally stunning waterfront sauna. Wood-fired Finnish sauna, smoke sauna, cold sea swim in the harbour. The way Helsinki does Sunday morning. Book a slot online — it fills up fast, especially in summer.
Löyly brunch → Design District
Grab a late brunch at Löyly's restaurant (waterfront terrace, worth it in July). Then walk or bike through Helsinki's Design District — Artek for Finnish design classics, Finnish Design Shop for modern homeware, Kaolin for ceramics. No pressure to buy, just beautiful browsing.
Hakaniemi Market Hall
The best market hall in Helsinki, and zero tourists. Two floors: downstairs is fresh food — Finnish cheeses, smoked fish, reindeer, vegetables. Upstairs has cafeterias. Get a bowl of lohikeitto (salmon soup) — it's the real thing.
Töölönlahti bay walk
A 3 km loop around the inner bay — one of Helsinki's most beautiful urban walks. Pass Finlandia Hall (Aalto), the National Museum (art nouveau), and the Opera House. Quiet on Sunday afternoon.
Dinner
Plant-forward small plates with an exceptional natural wine list. The most Kallio of the restaurants on this plan — relaxed, unstuffy, genuinely delicious. The wine pairings are worth doing.
Early night
Flight tomorrow at 11:15, check-out at 07:30. Tonight is for packing, one last Finnish beer from the hotel bar, and a good sleep.
Departure morning
The last few hours. One optional sunrise walk, then a smooth ride to the airport.
Hotel checkout
Leave bags at reception if you want to do the dawn walk without dragging luggage.
Optional: Market Square at dawn
If you're a morning person — Market Square at sunrise in July is genuinely magical. The ferries are loading, the harbour is golden, and you'll have it almost to yourself. 10 minutes from the hotel.
Bus 615 → HEL Airport
From Rautatientori (Central Railway Square), ~40 min to Terminal 2. Buy your HSL ticket in-app before boarding. Both services get you there well before 09:30.
Arrive HEL Terminal 2
Security is fast in the mornings on weekdays. You'll have time for a coffee once through.
Departure
Helsinki done. Until next time.
Everything else you need to know
Helsinki has excellent public transit. The HSL app handles everything — buy tickets, plan routes, track trams in real time.
~22 € per person. Covers all trams, buses, metro and ferries within the city zones. Pays for itself fast.
Tram 2 & 3: full city circuit (classic tourist tram). Tram 4: Seurasaari. Tram 6: Löyly waterfront area.
Bus 615: Terminal 2 → Rautatientori, ~40 min, ~6 €. More reliable than a taxi in traffic. Runs every 20 min.
Helsinki's city bike network (Kaupunkipyörät) is excellent in summer and one of the best ways to explore the waterfront and design district.
Available April–October. Over 350 stations across the city. Book via the kaupunkipyörät.fi app or website.
Day pass: ~5 €. First 30 min of each ride is free — ideal for hop-on hop-off. Just dock between longer journeys.
Waterfront from Market Square to Löyly. Design District loop. Töölönlahti bay. All flat, all beautiful in July.
All the restaurants in this plan at a glance.
Kallio moves late. Here's how the night typically builds:
Bars fill up. Lepakkomies and neighbourhood spots are lively. Good time for a Karhu lager and people-watching.
Siltanen/Kompleksi get going. Music shifts from background to foreground. Kutonen starts filling from midnight.
Kaiku opens. Kutonen hits its stride. This is late Helsinki — not for the faint-hearted but genuinely special.
None. Kallio is anti-dress-code. Smart jeans and a jacket is fine everywhere, including Kaiku.
Kutonen prefers cash. Everywhere else cards are fine. Have €30–40 on you just in case.
Bolt and Taksi Helsinki apps work well. Late-night taxis are easy to find. Don't try to walk home at 3am.
